Babcock Marine - Faslane, Scotland
Health & Safety Summer Graduate: July - September 2010
Working as a service designer at Faslane, this internship involved the development of a new system for ordering Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the naval base. Babcock and Naval staff and contractors all have occassions where they might require PPE and it is important that a clear ordering process is in place.
I developed a tool that both educated Line Managers of the different types of PPE available and guided them through a process in which PPE properties were suggested to them as a result of them selected the hazards that may be faced.
I also researched and summarised information on all the different areas of PPE which will help the Health & Safety Department to develop and update PPE policy for the base.
As a result of this placement, I gained a deep appreciation for Health & Safety and its importance in the work place. There is a large amount of legislation to be adhered to and I have seen how it is vital that employees are correctly trained in safe systems of work.
Central Station - Glasgow, Scotland
Central Station is:
"a creative social networking site for creative people who are looking for a place to talk to peers, share work and resources, access information and profile themselves. It is also for people who are interested in the arts, film and design generally - a new way to engage with a broad cross-section of creative work and debate."
Social media is a relatively new concept, especially for businesses and event organisers, who are only really just starting to harness the power it has. During my internship I was based at CenSta HQ, right in the centre of Glasgow. My work involved online research for particular events that we were involved with and this included:
- finding people on Twitter who have an exisitng interest in an area related to the event and adding them to a Twitter list
- Finding bloggers who keep a good blog about things relating to the event
I loved my time with Central Station and it was really interesting to gain an insight into social media and how it can be used to successfully market events.
PER Design - Beijing, China
Industrial design intern: July - September 2009
This position gave me the opportunity to move to China for the two months of my internship. Speaking no Mandarin at the time, I took the brave decision to head out there on my own.
During my time in Beijing, I was a valued member of the industrial design team, working on concept sketches, 3d modelling and the rendering of my designs. I was able to greatly improve my knowledge of SolidWorks and Photoshop especially.
My internship was invaluable in terms of giving me experience and insight into a real working environment, interacting with clients, collegues and other departments of the company, such as engineering.
Living in China was an amazing experience, immersing myself in the culture and customs of the Chinese people.
